A transcription of the diary I kept while traveling in Spain in August of 1999.

09 August 1999

Iranzu

I woke to the sound of a fountain, cow-bells, sheep, bells, roosters, peacocks and songbirds.

Stretching exercises, vocal warm-ups, learning a song by ear.

Breakfast (coffee and milk with bread, butter, preserves and pate).

Large group rehearsal, working on a song that I hadn't prepared.

Coffee break.

Small women's group rehearsal. Nine women, seven of whom are Dutch natives and one of whom is an American living in Holland. We spoke English.

Lunch (in two courses - one in the bowl and one on the plate, and remember to keep your silverware when the kitchen ladies took the bowl away).

Mixed group rehearsal. Four instruments, six men, eight women (all altos).

Siesta. Walked over to the bar and phoned Barcelona to add a night to my hostel reservation. Did laundry. Sketched in the claustro.

Lecture.

Dinner.

Tutti rehearsal.

Finally, free time until the 11:00 curfew (so that we wouldn't disturb the monks).
